Canesta: 3D object recognition chips or another virtual keyboard

Integrated circuit development company Canesta announced the development of a technology called electronic perception, which makes it possible to recognize 3D images cheaply and cheerfully using any device, including mobile and portable devices. The company reports that there are no more than two months left until the end of development and the possibility of launching into mass commercial production.

The highlight of the technology is that it takes into account the time it takes for light from a source to reach various parts of the sensor. Based on the data received from the sensor extended in space, a three-dimensional model of the visible object is calculated.

As for the chip itself – a CMOS sensor with built-in electronic perception technology, Canesta is in no hurry to disclose information about its specifications. It is only known that the sensor will be manufactured by UMC (United Microelectronics Corp.) by 0.25-micron process technology. There is still some information about a previous patent describing a chip consisting of a 100 x 100 point sensor, a microcontroller, a high frequency clock generator and an I / O port. When light hits one of the light-sensitive elements of the sensor, a clock pulse counter is triggered, which, in fact, plays the role of a time meter. Next, the microcontroller compares the time intervals for different elements and draws conclusions about their distance from the source. In the same patent (No. 6,323,942) contains the second version of the sensor design, which does not require a time meter due to the use of segments of fixed length. Most likely, the new chip will be made according to the second option.

The first version of the device will be able to distinguish objects at a distance of 18 inches (46 cm), against a background of a flat surface. The company used the sensor to demonstrate the possibility of creating a virtual keyboard. So, perhaps, not only Siemens will make virtual keyboards.

The company also plans that the second version of the devices will be able to distinguish objects at a sufficient distance to be able to build personality recognition modules in automated security systems. Well, the third generation of Canesta promises to be made in such a way that on their basis it would be possible to build car collision warning systems. By the way, it is argued that the cost of the first generation chips will be no more than $ 100 per piece.
