MIPS: Programmable Logic in Future Processors
According to some reports, MIPS Technologies intends to seriously reconsider the approach to the development of microprocessor cores. First of all, the company plans to make its processors “more configurable”, which means combining technologies for parallelization and distribution of computing tasks between several chips. In addition, the company is expected to add new vector commands to the list of SIMD instructions.
According to MIPS, one of the steps on this path will be the implementation of programmable logic in the kernel. In order to achieve a high level of processor performance for performing specific tasks, the company plans to add options for tuning the instructions of the processor core – the so-called UDI (user-definable instructions). It is worth noting that this approach can reduce the release time for new processors, because it is enough to develop a more or less universal programmable core (or cores) and, multiplying it many times, use it in all processors of the corresponding generation. Further improvements will probably consist in the development of new cores, in the improvement of control algorithms, wiring, interfaces and power circuits.
We’ve already reported that MIPS has struck a deal with Toshiba to release a kernel with additional instructions. So far, these are some DSP elements that will be added to the MIPS architecture core instruction set.
How it all will look in reality, how the UDI will be organized, whether the company will manage to create a successful architecture and how MIPS intends to license the added functions, no one really knows yet. It is possible that it will be something similar to multiprocessor chips with vector operations modules, hinted in MIPS.
