Toshiba announced some details of the technology of creating and reading discs using “blue” lasers
Toshiba Reveals Technology Details for Its 30GB 120mm Blue Laser Read / Write Optical Disc at the 2021 Consumer Electronics Show.
To increase capacity, Toshiba has reduced the track pitch to 0.29 microns and adopted a new track recording system that records both the outer and inner grooves, the distance between which is thus 0.58 microns. Large groove spacing makes auto-tuning much easier. According to the company, the signal-to-noise ratio for the track signal in such a system is almost 10 dB higher than with conventional recording. In addition to the above, the master disk is made using an ultraviolet laser (wavelength – 266 nm), and the track is in the form of a double helix. The efficiency of this format, according to Toshiba, is about 81.6%. The ZCLV standard is used to control the rotation speed.
The recording layer is made of an alloy of germanium, antimony and tellurium (Ge-Sb-Te). Toshiba says the guaranteed number of write-overwrite cycles is at least 1000. The company also investigated the crosswrite effect of changing the content of adjacent tracks during recording, and reports that for a new disc, the number of bad bits does not exceed 10-4 in 1000 write cycles per track and 1000 write cycles to the adjacent track on both sides. At the same time, for the number of bad bits 10-3 per 1000 cycles when writing or reading a disk, a radial and tangential tilt of up to 0.6 degrees is permissible.
