News from quantum fields: a way to write and read quantum information has been invented
Researchers at Harvard University report the successful completion of an experiment on recording information of the quantum state of laser radiation on a carrier and sequentially reproducing this quantum state without interference. This message brings scientists one step closer to creating a quantum computer.
The research team behind the experiment is led by Ronald Walsworth, who has a long history of pursuing a research program to create high security codes, quantum memory devices and, potentially, quantum computers. The main problem in the study of quantum objects and quantum measurements is the ease with which a quantum object is destroyed (as happens with a photon) or its state is disturbed (for example, when measuring the coordinate of an elementary particle) in a single act of measuring or reading information. Walsworth says that they were able to write the information contained in the photon without loss into the quantum state of the rubidium atom, and then also reproduce it without loss.
Three years ago, three groups conducting parallel research, including another Harvard group investigating the properties of Bose condensate and a group from Texas A&M University, demonstrated the ability to record quantum information contained in laser radiation in the form of an atom’s spin state, and then reading. However, unlike Walsworth’s recent experiment, the phase of the recorded and read signals did not match.
Thus, we can, in principle, talk about the creation of quantum memory, as a kind of component of a quantum computer. True, the time during which such memory stores information is negligible – fluctuations of the fields of the environment and the rubidium atom itself disturb the contents of the memory cell in a time of about 0.001 s, which requires too frequent update cycles. So, the excessive optimism of researchers about the imminent creation of a quantum computer, alas, cannot be divided.
