New terabyte tape cartridges from IBM
IBM Announces 1 Terabyte Recording Density Per Tape Cartridge. This is almost ten times more than the amount of data that can be written on modern cartridges. 1 TB of data equals approximately 16 days of continuous DVD-quality digital video playback, or 8,000 times the amount of information the brain receives in a lifetime, according to IBM.
Also yesterday, IBM published a roadmap of Enterprise 3590 storage systems, which will use 1 TB cartridges. It is noteworthy that the release of the new cartridge is timed by IBM to coincide with the fiftieth anniversary of the appearance of data carriers on magnetic tape. Just in May 1952, the company introduced the Model 726 drive, the capacity of which was 1.4 MB at the time of its appearance. The diameter of each reel in the drive cassettes was 12 inches, and the film was developed by 3M.
Storage capacity doubles every three years, according to the Giga Information Group. Moreover, interestingly, with increasing capacity, the size of devices decreases. So the 1-TB cartridge IBM, unlike its distant ancestor, has a size of 4×5 inches or 102×127 mm. The new cartridge has a recording density of 900 MB per square inch of film. This is still more than all current films, but still less than the fundamental limit. So there is still room for IBM to grow.
