Hitachi-STMicro: SH5-100 64-bit RISC Core

Superh inc., a joint venture between Japanese Hitachi and European STMicroelectronics, announced the release of its first product – a 64-bit RISC processor core with a performance of 700 Mips (mln. operations per second). SH5-100, based on the SuperH RISC processor family, according to the company, is the world’s first 64-bit processor core with an integrated FPU (floating-point unit), support for SIMD (single-instruction, multiple-data) instructions and integrated debugging capabilities – all in one chip.

The new SH-5 processor core is designed for use in the so-called “system-on-chip” (SOC) and provides performance in the order of 700 MIPS at an operating frequency of 400 MHz with a power consumption of less than 400 mW. New core is backward compatible with previous SuperH processors.

FPU is an additional IEEE-754 coprocessor integrated into the common core and allows for floating point calculations with normal and double precision. There are separate floating-point registers for this, configurable as 64-single precision, 32-double precision, or 16-single precision vector registers. FPU allows you to quadruple and add up to three instructions processed per clock cycle and thus bring performance up to 2.8 GFLOPs at a clock frequency of 400 MHz.

The core for processing SIMD instructions works with operate operands, each of which can have eight 8-bit, four 16-bit or two 32-bit values. The kernel also supports the so-called SHmedia mode, which processes a set of 32-bit fixed-length instructions to increase performance when working with real-time multimedia applications.

SH-5 is already available for licensing, with licenses ranging from perpetual to one-time.
