Intel to release 0.13 micron flash in Ireland
There are reports of some correction of Intel’s plans related to the operation of factories in the Republic of Ireland. So, instead of the previously planned construction of a new factory for the production of flash memory with a 0.13 micron technical process, the company intends to re-equip the existing capacities.
The scheme of using the factories is as follows: Fab 10 and Fab 14, located in Leixlip, near Dublin, will continue to produce all kinds of logic – chipsets, SRAM, integrated processors, according to the current 0.18 micron and 0.25 micron process technology standards , however, 0.13 micron equipment will also be installed here. According to the company’s specialists, most of the tools for production are used for production with rates of both 0.18 and 0.25 microns. The introduction of the 0.13 micron technical process will require the installation of special lithographic and other equipment, however, the production of flash memory will still require the use of an aluminum metallization process, which will be performed using the old tools.
Intel representatives are currently shying away from specifying the launch date for the 0.13 micron process technology at Fab 10/14 factories, limiting themselves to only a brief “soon enough”.
As for the fate of the Fab 24, which is currently being completed, the plans for its use are still unchanged: the factory will go into operation at the very beginning of 2021 and will produce 300 mm silicon wafers using a 90 nm process technology.
Intel plans to move by the end of 2021 to release up to 80% of flash memory with rates of 0.13 microns. This memory is currently being produced at the D2 factory in Santa Clara. Arizona’s Fab 22, in preparation for 0.13 micron flash, is currently busy releasing processors. Fab 11 in New Mexico and Fab 15 in Oregon to release 0.13 micron flash towards the end of 2021.
