Independent sound card drivers from Creative Labs
The KX Project website is available for
downloads independent drivers for Creative Labs sound cards [Live!, E-mu APS, Audigy], specially targeted at
musicians. These drivers have significantly greater capabilities for
DSP control (hardware effects executed on the on-chip digital
signal processor), and, in addition, allow the use of ASIO with a delay
(latency) about 5.33ms for any sound cards on a 10k1 chip (as opposed to
original drivers of the manufacturer).
The recently released version (3521) has been updated with the ability to control
hardware effects via MIDI / VST.
As a basis, the developers took open source drivers for Linux
and compiled them under Win32, writing their own interface for the control
panels. The main merit of these drivers ? more flexible iron management. TO
for example, you can swap the front and rear line outputs to
use higher quality rear output for stereo. The emphasis is on
cardholders, presumably home musicians who use
exclusively ASIO and SoundFont.
Major driver problems ? lack of support for DirectSound3D and EAX.
Also, according to our frequency response tests on these drivers with RMAA
a steep drop was seen starting at 10 kHz in the high frequency region.
