Ford Motor and Texas Instruments support FlexRay
This is not the first time that we have paid attention to discussions around automotive electronics and existing or new standards, since this topic may soon become relevant for our country. Recently, there was a discussion about whether it is worth equipping each new car with a “black” box, but now there is talk about the FlexRay standard, which was advocated by Ford Motor and Texas Instruments. The FlexRay consortium already includes such giants as General Motors, DaimlerChrysler, BMW, Motorola, Philips Semiconductors and Bosch Automotive Group.
FlexRay is a standard for a safe and reliable tire that can form the basis of future electronic (or, as they are called in the West, drive-by-wire) cars. In electronic vehicles, the mechanical connection between the driver, engine, wheels and brake pads will be replaced by an electronic one. Therefore, for more than three years, automakers have been talking about the need to develop a concept and architecture for a safe bus for an electronic car, which could reliably connect critical vehicle components with software drivers, and these, in turn, with an interface to users. The first drive-by-wires are expected to appear by 2021.
So far, there is no industry standard for the bus, and the FlexRay consortium is competing with the group of companies supporting TTA (Time-Triggered Architecture). Last week, representatives from two rival groups said they no longer intend to negotiate joint participation in the adoption of an industry standard. This means that both FlexRay and TTA standards will be used by two competing groups until perhaps one of them becomes generally accepted.
The TTA group, or rather, the Austrian company TTTech Computertechnik AG, has developed the Time-Triggered Protocol (TTP, Time Controlled Protocol), in which electronic circuits each time release the bus for emergency messages. This method is considered better than the one currently used in the controller-area network (CAN) scheme. In this scheme, control messages are triggered by events, hence the CAN scheme is called event-driven.
The FlexRay also relies on temporal separation of messages, but by leveraging the Byteflight architecture to combine the benefits of event-driven design, it provides more flexibility for manufacturers. By the way, it was flexibility that turned out to be a decisive factor in choosing a tire standard for GM.
Currently, the TTA group includes Audi, Volkswagen, PSA Peugeot, Renault, Delphi, NEC, Honeywell and Austriamicrosystems. But the FlexRay camp was replenished with two very heavyweight companies – Ford Motor and Texas Instruments.
