RDF Japan 2021: Yellowstone, FlexPhase, RaSer V and other Rambus prospects
At the RAMBUS Developer Forum Japan 2021 (RDF Japan 2021) conference currently taking place in Japan, Rambus presented its updated roadmap, in which, in particular, the place of the company’s new technology – Yellowstone is more precisely defined.
Yellowstone, or Yellowstone Octal Data Rate (ODR), will transmit up to eight data bits per clock cycle, which is achieved by differential parallelization of the signal transmission at 3.2 GHz. Yellowstone technology is based on real differential (the previous RSL protocol was pseudo-differential) signaling protocol DRSL (Differential Rambus Signaling Levels), 200 mVp-p (1.2 V – logic 0, 1.0 V – logic 1), including on-chip termination and bi-directional signaling.
Octal Data Rate technology is based on multiplying the external 400 MHz system clock signal by 4 times inside the chip and increases the clock frequency of the memory chip from 400 MHz to 1.6 GHz. Taking into account the technology of data transmission on both edges of the sync signal, we are already talking about 3.2 GHz. PLL stabilizes timing and keeps random spikes below 30 ps.
Yellowstone’s FlexPhase memory controller interface technology was presented at the conference. Moreover, a prototype of a motherboard using Yellowstone technology was presented.
In addition, the conference presented details about the technology being developed for the RaSer high-speed serial interface between RDRAM and the chipset. This technology also has a worthy place in the company’s roadmap. A new version of the serial interface, RaSer V, with a bandwidth of up to 6.4 Gbps was announced at the conference.
