Itanium 2 – soon, very soon ..
So, the long-awaited Itanium 2, possibly in the near future, will already see the light of day. Intel is reported to be officially launching 64-bit Itanium 2 processors and chipsets for 16-processor systems based on them within a few weeks.
Thus, Intel is taking a new step on the long and thorny path of server architectures, where it is going to enter into battle with Sun Microsystems and, to a lesser extent, with IBM. The battle between server architectures will be fought on three fronts:
- Benefit from integrating new processors and gaining performance from complex multiprocessor systems.
- Reliability of systems when performing resource-intensive tasks and popularity in the market. Sun and IBM are still leading in this direction.
- The speed of implementation of new designs, production and promotion of new products. Intel’s position is not so bad here.
Do not discount AMD, which is promoting its 64-bit X86 Opteron processors with might and main. Analysts tout the elegance and extensibility of the Opteron architecture, but question whether AMD has the expertise and experience to complete the architecture, and whether the company can find strong partners to conquer the market.
The market that companies are fighting for can be compared to the golden land of Eldorado. The fact is that according to IDC, a small part of high-end multiprocessor systems, about 11% of all servers, account for up to 60% of all profits. Intel will present its Itanium 2 in the summer. Processor prices will range from $ 2000 to $ 4000. By the end of the year, more than 20 Intel OEM partners, in particular in Russia, China and Brazil, will begin to supply 10 of their own designs adapted for the regions.
As for the chipset, around the same time, Intel will release the E8870 for 16-server systems, and Bull, NEC and Unisys will develop chipsets for 32-server systems based on Itanium 2. The company promises seven operating systems will be supported on Itanium 2 by the end of the year: two Windows, four flavors of Linux and HP-UX.
Leaving aside the performance issues of Itanium 2 for now, we can only argue that to improve the speed of processors Intel chose to increase the size of the third-level cache (L3) on the chip. Itanium 2 currently uses 3 MB L3 cache, 6 MB will be on the Madison processor due in 2021 and more is expected in the next chip in 2021. Naturally, this approach is criticized, and when four-processor Opteron-based servers are released in 2021, then it will be possible to compare with a similar Intel configuration. And the cost of systems based on IBM Power4 processors, which, by the way, provide higher performance when performing operations with integers, due to a smaller L3 cache size and better organization of the data bus, will be less than that of Itanium 2.
So wait and see. By the way, there were rumors circulated by Compaq that Itanium 2 may somehow show the technology of the deceased in Bose Digital, but so far not a single word about that ..
