Electronic Display Expo 2021: Spotlight on Organic EL Panels
EDEX 2021, held April 16-18 in Tokyo, focused on new developments in displays and related products. The focus was reportedly on organic electro-luminescent displays as the future display standard. Many companies intend to start mass production of organic EL panels in the near future.
A unique property of organic EL panels is that when current flows through the display elements, they themselves emit light. Thus, there is no need for screen backlighting, which is usual for standard LCD screens. Moreover, organic displays consume less energy, are thinner and better reproduce colors.
Some versions of these displays are already widely used in the market. For example, Tohoku Pioneer uses them (albeit in monochrome) in their car audio devices, NEC uses such displays in mobile phones for the FOMA network (model N2021).
Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology Co at EDEX 2021., Ltd. for the first time, prototypes of 17-inch EL displays were demonstrated, which will appear on the market in the next two to three years (previously only 15-inch versions were demonstrated). Prototypes have brightness up to 100 – 300 cd / sq. m, contrast 1: 200 and display up to 260 thousand. colors per dot with XGA resolution (1280 x 768).
Panels with small diagonals intended for use in mobile phones and PDA became the mass exhibits of the exhibition. Such panels have been demonstrated by Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology, Seiko Epson, Sanyo Electric and Tohoku Pioneer.
