Toshiba and MIPS: new 64-bit processors based on MIPS64 20Kc
TAEC (Toshiba America Electronic Components) and MIPS Technologies have announced plans to jointly develop the next generation of 64-bit processors based on the MIPS RISC core, codenamed “Amethyst”.
Toshiba’s subsidiary ArTile Microsystems will participate in the development of the “Amethyst” core.
Toshiba’s new series of processors, codenamed TX99, will be based on the recently unveiled MIPS 600 MHz version of its 64-bit MIPS64 RISC 20Kc core, manufactured in a 0.13-micron process. TX99 is primarily intended for use in automotive, office electronics, consumer multimedia devices, and networking products.
Such companies as Algorithmics, Green Hills Software, Mentor Graphics, Microsoft, MontaVista, Red Hat and Wind River intend to release programming tools, as well as ready-made applications for new processors. In addition, the MIPS Alliance Program (MAP) will provide support for current hardware and software applications such as 802.11, Bluetooth, algorithms MPEG2, MPEG4, etc.
