ISSCC: Broadcom performs OC-192 in CMOS
More news from the international exhibition ISSCC: Broadcom presented its new development on paper: a single-chip receiver and transmitter operating at 10 Gbps (!) and conforming to the OC-192 standard. Other developers for such equipment chose BiCMOS or GaAs.

CMOS has its advantages – low cost and integrability into logical ICs. However, there are also big disadvantages. Broadcom said its solution can deal with the main problem of CMOS at high frequencies: jitter noise (noise caused by phase / frequency jitter) introduced into the chip by RF components of the circuit. Broadcom’s development team was able to bring in effective proprietary noise suppression elements to reduce such noise to 85 ps and below.

A trial OC-192 transmitter chip, which was made using the 0.18 micron process at TSMC, according to the developers, in active mode consumes only 450 mW at a voltage of 1.8 V. With the implementation of the receiver, things are a little more complicated, but Broadcom says that the CMOS solution is already close to reality.

Maximum receiver intrinsic jitter noise – 40 ps. Trial receiver implementation consumes 870 mW at 1.8 V.

Broadcom does not deny that there is still work to do. After all, the industry does not need unreliable solutions, but cheapness is always welcome. Broadcom considers the next step to create a unified transceiver circuit. It already exists on paper, but not yet in silicon.
