Description
Radar makers protest new broadband emission limits

Companies manufacturing radar equipment used to scan roads, bridges and other massive structures justify their protests by the fact that the new rules of the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on the use of new means of broadband (Ultra-Wideband, UWB) will leave they are out of work.

Geophysical Survey Systems (GSSI) protested the most. The company says strict FCC rules governing UWB-GPS communications will render existing products unusable. Basically, the GSSI protests against the reckoning of its radars, which, roughly speaking, into the surface, and do not interfere with GPS signals in any way, to other UWB devices that can emit electromagnetic waves wherever they please. By the way, the company has been supplying radars for federal and local road services and the American army for over 15 years. The cost of one such radar ranges from $ 13,000 to $ 100,000.

The tightening of FCC rules was due to concerns expressed by the US Department of Defense about the correct operation of GPS positioning systems near electromagnetic sources in a wide frequency band. However, the FCC has assured everyone that, perhaps, in the future, the rules will be relaxed if the Ministry of Defense’s concern turns out to be in vain. (But, as we say, they wait for the promised three years).

Under the new rules, UWB devices must emit at frequencies no higher than 3.1 GHz, and signals spurious to GPS with a frequency of 1.6 GHz must be suppressed to 34 dB. From now on, only law enforcement agencies and security forces can use radars. However, it is possible to use radars for civilian purposes: for geological exploration and in construction.
