Sony unveils 1.5-inch flexible LCD screen
The further into the forest … the thinner the screens! At least liquid crystal.
According to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun newspaper, Sony has introduced a 1.5-inch TFT LCD on a plastic substrate that is only 0.4 mm thick and weighs 0.5 g. By comparison, a conventional LCD on a glass substrate would have a thickness of 1.4 mm and a weight of 3.5 g.
The main problem in the use of polymer substrates was the fact that a high temperature (about 400 degrees Celsius) is used in the process of manufacturing screen electronics. In technology developed by Sony, an electronic circuit is first made on glass and then transferred to a plastic substrate. In addition to conventional liquid crystal displays, this technology makes it possible to work effectively with thin-film transistors (TFT), and, according to Sony, using existing equipment.
Sony screens are designed primarily for mobile devices and cell phones. The technology is expected to be commercialized within two to three years.
