External-internal modem AVC-56 – a new product of Russian upgraders

An interesting development was recently presented by the author of popular firmware for modems U.S.Robotics Andrey Vavaev. He proposed a solution for converting the internal “Courier” on the ISA bus of the old model into an external modem in the original version.

It so happened historically that the global computer industry has largely abandoned the use of the ISA bus in modern motherboards – now it is rare to find a motherboard with ISA slots on board. This fact directly concerns the owners of internal modems on the ISA bus, which is U.S. Robotics Courier V.Everything. The vast majority of owners of “internal Couriers” after upgrading their computer are faced with the problem of the lack of ISA slots on the motherboard. In this case, they are forced to sell the old modem and buy a new one. At the same time, there are not so many options – either buy an external modem, or buy a modem on the PCI bus.

Since “Couriers” (both old and new models) are not produced on the PCI bus and will not be produced at all, the choice of an “external Courier” is obvious. At the same time, there are problems of choosing how to take a modem – a new one (mod.3453) models with a linear node on integrated circuits Silabs or the old model using a classic transformer line coupler with a telephone line.

Since the price of the “new Courier 3453” is $ 150, and the external “old Courier” now costs around $ 80, such a replacement of the internal Courier with an external one will cost $ 50 (old external Courier) or $ 120 (new external Courier).

It is from the replacement of the internal modem that Andrey Vavaev proposes to refuse. The essence of his idea is that the internal Courier is mounted in a special Mobile Rack case, which is installed in 5.25 “PC case space.

Connection in the COM port is carried out directly to the connector of the corresponding COM port. Also mentioned is the theoretical possibility in the future to develop and connect this “monoblock” to the USB bus. Power for the modem is supplied from the PC power supply via a standard connector. The front panel of the Mobil Rack contains LED indicators, a volume control, and reset buttons “Reset” and a programmable button “Mode”. The telephone connectors of the modem are brought out, that is, the telephone cable will now be located at the front of the PC, and not as before at the back.
