IDF Spring 2021: About Implementing Infiniband Architecture

Intel made six presentations at IDF Spring 2021 that showcased the wide range of capabilities of InfiniBand protocols, as well as the industry’s success in developing products based on the new architecture

InfiniBand architecture is an I / O technology that makes it easier and faster to connect servers to each other and to systems that interact with them, such as remote storage and network devices.

In a presentation on Unified InfiniBand Infrastructure, prepared by Intel in partnership with 25 of the leading InfiniBand architecture firms, Intel Interoperability Labs demonstrated the use of a variety of industry standard protocols for transferring data between storage, network, and cluster devices over a single InfiniBand interconnect fabric. to Ethernet and fiber-optic networks.

Linear scalability of applications when connected through an InfiniBand fabric was first demonstrated at the IDF. Delivered on McKinley platform, Intel prototypes of host adapters in a clustered configuration based on InfiniBand architecture were used.

The presentation of Biokey’s fingerprint identification software, run by a clustered server running Oracle 9iRAC based on Intel Itanium processors, demonstrated dynamic hot spooling of server resources when connected through an InfiniBand fabric.

At the presentation of the capabilities of analysis, interpretation and presentation of data, the technology of proactive notification of the administrator about the switching of information flows from the emergency server in the cluster to another server was demonstrated for the first time using the enterprise-level management software CA Unicenter. The presentation involved a server database cluster running Oracle 9iRAC, which served the SAS WebHound and Enterprise Miner software in the process of analyzing, interpreting and presenting data.
Along with the heterogeneous InfiniBand fabric, the presentation showcased three ingenious storage solutions based on the InfiniBand architecture that can deliver high performance storage connectivity.

The National Center for Supercomputing Computing (NCSA) Disaster Model Presentation demonstrated the performance gains of clustered computing solutions as a result of the InfiniBand architecture, as well as the flawless integration of the InfiniBand fabric into the infrastructure based on the Message Passing Interface (MPI) – one of two standard protocols for messaging between high-performance computing devices.

During the presentation of the Fujitsu Direct Access File System (DAFS), Fujitsu presented a high-performance DAFS server serving 16 nodes connected by an InfiniBand switch fabric as part of a clustered computing solution. The solution developers demonstrated a high degree of integration of the DAFS file server with client nodes as part of a high-performance SCore cluster while working with the distributed software NCBA-BLAST.
