Intel licensed networking technology from Lucent
Intel announced that it has licensed a technology to optimize and increase network efficiency, called the Transport Offload Engine (TOE), from Lucent Technologies.
According to Intel representatives, TOE technology is effective when working with multi-layer network protocols – Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), User Datagram Protocol (UDP), Internet Protocol and Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP). Thanks to the use of a special engine for working with these protocols, the data transfer rate is improved, and the main processor is freed up to work with other applications.
Licensing agreement includes additional commitment from Intel to further support, test and manufacture Lucent’s TA1000 controller. Intel plans to use TOE technology in its new adapters for Gigabit Ethernet and NAS. Lucent will use Intel’s TA1000 adapters in its networking products.
