SFI-5: you give 40 Gbps?

Today the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) announced the adoption of the SFI-5 (Serializer / Deserializer (SerDes) Framer Interface Level 5) specification for networks with speeds up to 40 Gbps. More precisely, this is not yet a specification, but an Implementation Agreement (IA), on the basis of which manufacturers will build equipment for OC-768 ATM and Packet-over-SONET / SDH (POS) networks.

The agreement of use describes the interface between the various SerDes components, the forward-error-correction (FEC) algorithm and the parameters of the physical layer devices. As already mentioned, SFI-5 is intended for use in OC-768, STM256, OTN OTU-3 and other optical networks with speeds up to 40 Gbps. SFI-5 also describes the interface for interaction between optical converters and framers, as well as converters and FEC error correction modules.
