NVIDIA Crush K8: Hammer will not be overlooked

Having heard enough about the upcoming release of the nForce 2 chipset from NVIDIA, after Computex 2021 we received almost no news about the Crush K8 chipset for the AMD Hammer line of processors.

Meanwhile, the Crush K8 chipset is already ready for mass production, NVIDIA officials said at yesterday’s press conference in San Jose, Caliph., USA.

So, NVIDIA Crush K8 will start shipping in Q4. Crush K8 by its structure is a representative of a discrete line of chipsets, without integrated graphics. Nevertheless, the new product has something to boast about – it looks like Crush K8 will be the first chipset for Hammer chips, made in one package and combining North and South bridges in one package, respectively, System Platform Processor (SPP) and Media & Communications Processor (MCP ).

Despite the fact that the chipset has not yet been officially announced, there are already photos of the reference design board on it.

Of course, the decision to integrate the chipset into one case was not without criticism: of course, manufacturers of motherboards based on Crush K8 will have to be especially careful with the wiring. According to a company representative, the new chipset consists of 18 million. transistors. By the way, Crush K8 will be produced using the 0.15 micron technical process.

All this is great, but what about NVIDIA-specific specifications for chipsets with integrated graphics?? A company spokesman explained that the release of the first discrete chipset, in their opinion, is the most relevant event, since the AMD Hammer series chips only have to conquer their niche in the market at the first stage. In the future, of course, NVIDIA plans to release all kinds of chipset modifications, including versions for mobile PCs.

In addition, as you know, there are peculiarities of the operation of the memory controller integrated into the Hammer chip, which is associated with additional difficulties in the operation of video subsystems. However. NVIDIA is optimistic about this issue, and estimates such an architecture as quite promising.
