Philips: integrated telematics processor for GPS systems
Philips Semiconductors announced the start of sample shipments of the first single-chip telematics processor SAF3100. The chip includes a processor core, 12-channel GPS electronics, a dual-channel 14-bit analog-to-digital converter, built-in memory, a CAN bus controller and a high-speed UART interface that allows the SAF3100 to be integrated into a cell phone. Two-channel ADC is designed to digitize the signal coming from the gyroscope.
The processor is designed for remote tracking and determination of coordinates using GPS, navigation, integration into automatic assistance call systems, as well as for remote control and diagnostics of cars. The SAF3100 can be used in the Philips UAA1570 GPS system and, according to the company, should be compatible with the UAF1572 expected in the third quarter, which will be smaller in size and will have much lower power consumption.
Among the undoubted advantages of the single-chip design of such devices, Philips considers the rather low cost of their production. Mass production of SAF3100 will begin in February. Source: Silicon Strategies
