Fujitsu Announces Another Breakthrough in Hard Drive Density Enhancement Technologies. The new technology, expected to be introduced in the next two to four years, will increase the recording density to 300 GBit per square inch. In other words, the recording density will increase sixfold. The current 2.5-inch hard drives have a capacity of 30 GB of data per platter, the commercialization of new technology from Fujitsu promises an increase in volumes up to 180 GB per platter.
Less than a year ago, the company announced the development of recording technology with a density of up to 100 Gbps.

The new technology is based on the use of GMR (Giant Magneto-Resistive) magnetic heads in the so-called “perpendicular” mode – Current-Perpendicular-to-Plane (CPP), which allows, for example, current hard drives to increase the output signal level three times. The current GMR heads operating in the Current-in-Plane mode, due to the low level of the output signal, have a limitation of use at a recording density of about 100 Gbit / sq. inch.

That is, new, more sensitive CPP GMR heads have now been added to the technology for increasing the recording density developed a year ago by Fujitsu. Recall that back in August last year, Fujitsu demonstrated a linear recording density of more than a million flux changes per inch (1000 kFCI, an approximate match in recording density – up to 150 Gbit / sq. Inch) on a media developed by the company with by the name Synthetic Ferrimagnetic Media. Currently, work is underway on the use of a new version of the carrier – Advanced Synthetic Ferrimagnetic Media, which, in combination with CPP GMR heads, will allow reaching a recording density of 300 Gbit / sq. inch.

In the next four years, Fujitsu intends to increase the capacity of its 2.5-inch hard drives (as you know, the company refused to release 3.5-inch hard drives for desktop PCs last year, the profit margin is too low), up to 360 GB.

Fujitsu rivals are also awake, IBM with its “pixie dust” technology and the newcomer Read-Rite are working on similar technologies.

Everything would be great if the prices for hard drives hadn’t dropped so significantly in recent years. The price of a megabyte on a hard drive has dropped from $ 11.54 in 1988 to $ 0.01 now, and the number of independent manufacturers in this sector has dropped from 75 to 13. Another indicator of market activity has significantly decreased: earlier, the capacity of hard drives doubled, on average, within a year, now – within 15 and even 18 months. In connection with a decrease in the rate of return in this area and a corresponding decrease in R&D costs, the rate of introduction of new technologies has also slowed down.
