Intel licenses PowerVR. What is it for?
Imagination Announces Intel has licensed embedded PowerVR graphics for use in its chips. It has been argued that these are likely to be graphics chips for pocket PCs.
However, there are several different uses for the PowerVR core. The PowerVR MBX family includes a pro version for high-end desktop applications, a standard version and a lite version for the Pocket PC developer.
Following a long tradition, Intel has so far declined to disclose any plans for a licensed graphics core. As a company spokesman said: “We are constantly licensing something for developments inside Intel, and it is hardly possible to say with certainty when and what exactly we will present.”.
PowerVR MBX core is built using 0.13-micron process technology, includes many features of the Kyro line, including anti-aliasing (antialiasing) throughout the scene and processing of 24-bit (true-color) color. PowerVR MBX handles up to 4 million. polygons per second, operating at a clock frequency of 120 MHz, but it is possible to reduce the clock frequency to 50 MHz to reduce the power consumption of the chip to about 60 mW.
