U Series X: a new line of “consumer” hard drives from Seagate
Seagate Technology today announced a new low-cost line of 3.5-inch U Series X drives specifically designed for use in non-traditional markets such as Xbox consoles, audio players, copiers, retail POS terminals, and low-cost PCs. New hard drives have only one read / write head. In the new hard drives, however, engines with modern hydrodynamic bearings (SoftSonic technology) will be used, while the acoustic noise of the working disk will not exceed 26 dB. The spindle rotation speed of the new series hard drives – 5400 rpm, shock load – up to 350 G (3D Defense System).
The new U Series X hard drives equipped with the traditional SeaTools Suite diagnostic utilities will begin shipping to key Seagate partners in June.
