NV17 and NV25: New GeForce 4 Series GPUs from NVIDIA

The moment has come for the official announcement: today NVIDIA officially announced the release of two new graphics chips of the GeForce 4 series for the new generation NV17 and NV25 video cards.

The line of video cards GeForce 4 is intended to replace the cards of the GeForce 3 family in the shortest possible time. Both chips have some common features, for example, similar memory controllers – two-channel for NV17 and four-channel for NV25, the same set of tools for increasing the effective memory bandwidth of the second generation – compression and fast clearing of the Z buffer, MSAA, HSR, two independent RAMDACs, CRTC controllers , integrated TV and digital DVI outputs. Both processors will be manufactured using 0.15 micron process technology. At the same time, NV17 does not support pixel and vertex shaders, is equipped with a hardware MPEG2 decoder and a dynamic power management system, two LVDS transmitters and has only two fill pipelines, moreover, it has only one T&L.

NV25 has superscalar (double) T&L, four fill pipelines, etc.d. For more details on the characteristics, as well as the test results of cards on the new NV25 graphics chips, see our article published today NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4400 and GeForce4 Ti 4600 (NV25) – or “Again – twenty five”.

The following products will be presented on the market on the new NV17 and NV25 GPUs:

  • GeForce 4 Ti4600 (NV25) – 300 MHz core / up to 128 MB 325 (650) MHz 128-bit DDR memory
  • GeForce 4 Ti4400 (NV25) – 275 MHz core / up to 128 MB 275 (550) MHz 128-bit DDR memory
  • One more junior product based on NV25 will be announced later
  • GeForce 4 MX460 (NV17) – 300 MHz core / up to 64 MB 275 (550) MHz 128-bit DDR memory
  • GeForce 4 MX440 (NV17) – 270 MHz core / up to 64 MB 200 (400) MHz 128-bit DDR memory
  • GeForce 4 MX420 (NV17) – 200 MHz core / up to 64 MB 166 MHz 128-bit SDRAM memory

A wave of press releases about new solutions based on NV17 and NV25 from graphic card manufacturers is expected today. Judging by the data of the Japanese press, the first GeForce4 cards have already appeared in this country. We will not present the performance characteristics of these cards now, we will soon get them from official sources, we will simply inform you about the prices for the GeForce4 MX440 model with 64 MB of memory in OEM version: they fluctuate around $ 140 – $ 145. For now, we will focus on such a price level.
