Microsoft: Denial of Service Attack on Port 445 May Cause Excessive CPU Use

Description of another vulnerability in Windows versions 2000/2000 SP1 / 2000 SP2 Server, Professional and Advanced Server versions. When performing a DoS (Denial of Service) attack on port 445, a situation arises that leads to a significant (almost maximum) increase in the processor load and the load of the computer’s memory by the OS kernel. As a result, the performance of the system as a whole is drastically reduced, and some applications and OS services may stop working. This vulnerability affects both one and multiprocessor systems, with the only exception that the latter get out of the stupor much faster.

The patch for fixing this vulnerability is not yet available at this time. Users who do not want to put up with such a state of affairs are offered two options for fixing the problem by manually editing the OS registry. This document provides detailed step-by-step instructions for disabling NetBIOS over TCP / IP and creating the MaxWorkItems parameter in the required registry key.
