RAM market: analysis and forecasts

The first two quarters of this year were marked by a persistently low level of business activity. It is not particularly clear how, against the backdrop of all the ongoing confusion, one can expect the market growth predicted by analysts in the second half of the year. The growth in demand, we recall, was expected in connection with the release of a new chipset (i845G), falling prices for processors and the renewal of the PC park by large corporations.

In the beginning, everyone was expecting a huge growth in the RAM market, and most distributors increased their stocks in anticipation of the promised boom. Then it turned out that demand was not kept at the desired level, and prices fell slightly. This “a little” lasted until about the beginning of May, after which prices simply collapsed. Thus, the fall in contract prices (for 128 Mbit SDRAM chips) in the first two weeks of May was 25%, and in the period from March 1 to May 14 – 48%.

Throughout the spring, manufacturers hoped that spot prices would stop at least at $ 3, which is quite acceptable for most of them (according to other sources – $ 5), but the worst was destined to come true – prices were able to stop only at the $ 2 mark, after which gradually (and very slowly) began to grow. However, the fall in contract prices continues to this day (although on average they are twice as high as spot prices). Analysts also believe that contract prices will continue to decline due to the very weak and slow (this and next quarter) spot market.

In principle, there is nothing to be surprised at – news agencies have long been saying that distributors’ warehouses are overcrowded, and the volume of production significantly exceeds demand, plus, an incomprehensible tactic on the part of Hynix and Micron – they sign a contract, then they don’t … many were simply hypnotized by their “marriage games” – after the news of the signing of the memorandum, prices for memory (as well as shares of the five largest Taiwanese DRAM manufacturers and Korean Samsung) immediately went up, and after the termination, they slid down sharply, but a couple of days later they grew again by 5-10%. This was accompanied by rumors in the Korean press about the purchase of Hynix by such big companies as Infineon, Samsung and even LG Electronics.

The opinions of many memory suppliers boil down to one thing: in the current situation, a new round of price wars in the memory product market is quite possible. The very wars that went on for almost the entire last year. Contract prices will fall but will be stopped by rising spot prices. Moreover, Micron’s fiscal quarter ends in May, and for this the company may well throw out all its stocks on the market. In this case, a sharp drop in prices is simply inevitable.

Analysts do not expect a rise in prices until the end of the second quarter and believe that such a rise will take place only in the third quarter, together with a seasonal increase in demand for IT products.

Almost contrary to all the facts, analytics from Gartner Dataquest appeared, representing a different point of view on the current situation:

DRAM sales growth is currently estimated at 78.4%, or $ 21.1 billion, according to fresh analytics., which signals some recovery compared to 2021. The main growth in demand for memory is expected in the second half of 2021.

According to Gartner Dataquest, the current decline in memory spot prices is temporary. Analysts are confident that in the second half of the year the semiconductor industry will experience a slow, but steady rise. Experts from Gartner Dataquest cite the fact that most US companies have begun updating their PCs with new models as one of the factors in the growth in demand for computers. In addition, one of the factors behind the market recovery will be the projected recovery in mobile phone sales.
