Dell SmartStep – failure or just the beginning?
Not so long ago, Dell entered the low-cost laptop market with its SmartStep. The $ 950 SmartStep 100N, introduced in March, is built on a 1.06GHz Mobile Celeron, has a 20GB hard drive, a 14 “screen, and a 24x CD-ROM, which is pretty good overall. However, due to the slow pace of sales of SmartStep notebooks, Dell is seriously considering changing its strategy in this market segment.
Sources in Taiwan say SmartStep has few thousand sales per month. This is almost several times lower than the 30-50 thousand per month that Dell was counting on.
Thus, according to some analysts, Dell’s strategy of direct selling laptops in the lower price range ended in complete failure, and the future of this issue now depends on how successfully the company will promote the product or how well it can negotiate with resellers. Others do not feel much pessimism, based on the considerations that a new product is never instantly accepted by the market. But one way or another, Dell will have to change its strategy, since the company’s current customers are unlikely to be interested in SmartStep due to its modest capabilities.
So it’s interesting to see what happens in the future with this inexpensive brand-name laptop.
