OKI – FD SOI in life

While Intel’s FD (Fully Depleted) SOI technology is still only in roadmaps, OKI is already preparing to release ICs based on this technology.

Although so far this is a low-integration IC, Oki said it has developed a technology for making transistors on a silicon layer (which is an insulator – SOI) with a thickness of only 50 nm with areas of drain and source of low resistance. And this is the solution to the problem of using FD SOI, in which the resistances of the drain, source and thin-walled channels are relatively high. However, another factor that directly affects the speed of the transistor is greatly reduced – the capacity of the p-n junction.

Oki claims that in small wristwatch chips made with FD SOI on wafers from the French Soitec, its researchers were able to reduce power consumption by 75% (!).

And yet, these are still prototypes. Oki will move to full-scale FD SOI manufacturing for both logic and short-range RF (Bluetooth) chips by next spring. Do not be surprised, in RF technology on FD SOI it is possible to create integrated passive reactive components with a higher Q factor than conventional Si CMOS.
