Hitachi and IBM unite hard drive production

Hitachi and IBM announced plans to form a strategic alliance to develop new open standards for the next generation of storage, such as the Common Information Model (CIM).

In addition (this part of the agreement is, in my opinion, the most interesting), the companies agreed to unite the production of hard drives, for which a separate independent joint venture will be formed with a 70% share in Hitachi.

The enterprise will combine a research center and production facilities, plus the corresponding sales and marketing departments. It is assumed that according to the agreement on the formation of the new joint venture, Hitachi will pay IBM some compensation for its capacity for the production of hard drives, although, in this form, the deal does not look like a sale to IBM of its division, which was previously quite transparently hinted at by analysts.

The new venture will be headquartered in San Jose, California. The MP leadership will be formed from employees of both companies.
