UMC abandons SiLK in favor of K-film

After almost a year of work with low-k dielectrics manufactured by Dow Chemical, UMC decided to abandon the use of Dow SiLK films in 0.13 micron technological process. Thus, UMC and IBM will follow different paths in the further development of their technical processes.

Instead of SiLK products, the Taiwanese company intends to use low-k Coral film from Novellus Systems, which UMC calls K-film. The dielectric constant of K-film is almost equal to that of SiLK – 2.7, but UMC claims that K-film is easier to use and more versatile. In addition, to work with K-film, it is possible to use the same equipment that is already installed at UMC factories.

Problems with low dielectric films are not limited to UMC. The development of such materials, however, is very important for the transition to the 130 nm process technology with copper conductors. UMC competitors such as Rival Taiwan Semiconductor report similar problems, however, have already been overcome. TSMC, for example, uses Black Diamond, a film made by Applied Materials.

Prior to that, UMC developed a 130 nm process technology in cooperation with IBM and Infineon. Both companies currently use SiLK, which has a dielectric constant of 2.65.

UMC claims that the transition to K-film should not affect the relationship with the company’s customers. In addition, K-film is planned to be used in technological processes of flesh up to 0.10 microns and even at 70 nm nodes.
