Sequence Nano Cool: Making Chips Economical

Today it is quite obvious that the main problem in the development of new integrated circuits is their power consumption. Reducing power consumption is often achieved by reducing the supply voltage. However, although they say that there is no limit to perfection, the supply voltage limit still exists and, in general, is not far off.

Sequence Design has launched an initiative to facilitate the development of cost-effective, low-voltage ICs dubbed NanoCool. As planned, Sequence and its partners will join forces to improve existing chip development tools and release new ones, including their final verification.

The company announced the creation of the IP Wizard tool, which will form the basis of the program. IP Wizard automates the creation of power models for IP blocks (intellectual-property) of semiconductor microcircuits. Sequence announced that IP Wizard is already actively used by ARM.

The company’s partners in the initiative are Silicon Metrics, Virtual Silicon, ARM and Toshiba. If the Sequence initiative is successful, the company will be able to allay fears related to power and noise problems. Gartner Dataquest was very positive about the Sequence initiative, noting that the company has chosen a very correct strategy to provide the right tools to IC manufacturers. With these tools, optimizing semiconductor power circuits will become a much less slow and time-consuming process, according to Dataquest.

Several well-known products are involved in NanoCool: PowerTheater (formerly known as Watt Watcher), a real-time energy monitoring tool; PhysicalStudio, a virtual circuit simulation package purchased by Sequence from Sapphire Design Automation; and ShowTime, a Sequence analyzer adapted to monitor power surges. Sequence will add IP Wizard to PowerTheater package this spring. An option for early design of power circuits in the so-called “vectorless” version is also expected. Sequence promises to add dual-threshold cells to PhysicalStudio this month instead of high-voltage-thresholds when performance can be sacrificed.

Going forward, the company plans to introduce a virtual prototyping tool, codenamed Design Explorer. This tool will allow you to synthesize food chains and analyze
heat release. It is not yet known when the Design Explorer will be released.

Sequence partners, meanwhile, go about their business: Silicon Metrics promises to help with noise performance, and Virtual Silicon will work on the description of the two-level cells. Virtual Silicon says it is urgent to create models and learn how to manage static and dynamic power consumption with silicon in mind to effectively use low-voltage power-saving chips, memory, I / O controllers and high-speed interfaces with element sizes of 0.10 microns. Therefore, Virtual Silicon was very happy about the Sequence initiative.

The IP Wizard is intended not only for developers, but also for integrators who would like to gain insight into energy issues. True, to satisfy your desire by purchasing a rather expensive package (the cost of PowerTheater Analyst, which is expected in April, is about $ 80 thousand.), not every integrator wants.
