Microsoft Security Bulletin MS02-017: Unchecked buffer in the MUP Could Enable Code Execution
The MUP (Multiple UNC Provider) service determines the ownership of a resource with a given UNC name and caches the correspondence of these names with specific redirectors installed on the system. The caching process is duplicated, but no data validation is performed in the second copy. Using this Unchecked buffer, an attacker can carry out a buffer overrun attack, which will either crash the system or give him access to run arbitrary code on the attacked system.

In order to prevent such an outrage, several patches were released that cover this vulnerability in different versions of Windows – Windows NT 4.0, Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server Edition, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows XP 64-bit Edition.
