Forecast of the RAM market for the week

Spot prices were fairly stable in the first half of this week, according to DRAM eXchange. Everyone froze in anticipation of the results of the international exhibition CeBIT 2021, which will be known by the end of the week, and most are sure that the situation will significantly clear up after the start of this exhibition, but they still fear another price increase.

In the middle of the month, DRAM manufacturers are going to raise contract prices again: 256 MB and 128 MB SDRAM modules will rise in price to $ 100 and $ 45, respectively.

Marketers from Semico Research Announce DRAM Market Forecast to Grow 43.3% to $ 16 Billion. There are other opinions – less optimistic from Dataquest (up 23%) and overly optimistic – from San Jose Research House (up 96.6% to $ 21.9 billion).). However, if you take into account the 60% decline last year, then any forecast looks very nice. According to analysts, the main driver of market growth is not the number of sold chips and modules, as it was before, but the catastrophic price increase, which began last fall.

At the same time, memory manufacturers are looking for additional revenue growth. They are confident that they can raise prices further by controlling supply to OEMs and at the same time preventing leakage of products to the spot market.

In recent weeks, prices for DDR, SDRAM and RDRAM have practically leveled off – the price of a 128 MB SDRAM module is $ 38 – $ 44, while for a DDR module of the same capacity – $ 36 – $ 42, and for RDRAM – $ 35 – $ 38. Thus, mass migration of users and manufacturers to DDR memory is expected soon enough, and Intel and its new chipset – i845G will help in this.

In 1996, there were 28 DRAM manufacturers on the market; by the end of 2021, there were fourteen of them, the top five of which owned 80% of the market. By the end of 2021, amid ongoing mergers (Toshiba and Micron,
Infineon and Winbond with Mosel Vitelic and others), analysts expect that only the top three manufacturers will own 70-80% of the market, but the possibility of acquiring Hynix by Micron was not taken into account.
If the deal between Hynix and Micron takes place, there are two possible scenarios for the behavior of the new giant: it will provoke additional price increases or it will play short in order to eliminate competitors.

It should be noted that the industry’s transition to 256 Mbit SDRAM chips from 128 Mbit chips is almost complete. At the same time, the industry’s course towards DDR is visible. Analysts believe DDR will become the main memory type by the end of this year (over 50% of the DRAM market).

A consequence of the current pricing policy of memory manufacturers is that foreign PC builders have seen a steady decline in demand for SDRAM due to its high price. There is no decrease in demand on the Russian market. Another interesting fact: the manufacturers of graphic cards reported a decrease in the supply of their products in February due to lower demand, which in turn was caused by the increased prices for DRAM, which is used in them.

To summarize: a decrease in demand for SDRAM due to high prices on the one hand and a gradual transition to DDR plus total control of SDRAM supplies by consolidating chip manufacturers will sooner or later lead to price stabilization. Moreover, the gradual transition of consumers to DDR on the one hand and the delay in such a transition of memory manufacturers on the other hand will lead to a drop in prices for SDRAM in the next couple of months.

According to today’s DRAM Exchange, prices of all types of DRAM are down 1% – 2%. ASIC data indicate that prices have remained at the same level or slightly increased for some items. Most likely, in the next week prices will be quite stable, their further growth seems unlikely.
