ARM and MIPS: Faster, Higher, Stronger ..

At the Embedded Processor Forum last week, ARM unveiled a new ARM11 architecture that supports microprocessor clock speeds up to 500 MHz. Also on display was the ARM1026EJ-S, a 325 MHz ARM10 processor with Java support.

ARM technologies are currently used by about 90 companies. Thus, ARM is one of the largest copyright holders in the intellectual property market. According to Gartner Dataquest, in 2021 the company’s share in this market was about 20%, and the amount of profit was $ 179 million.

However, criticism is heard from different sides to ARM. First of all, say the disaffected, ARM is too slow to bring really new technologies to the market. So, the architecture of ARM11 is very similar to ARM10, which was similar to ARM9, and that, in turn, was similar to ARM7. Most likely, ARM’s desire to release a product that is mature and safe for business always outweighs the desire to take risks and enter the market with something unusual. Well, their English prudence can be understood and even, probably, approved.

At the same time, MIPS, whose revenues are somewhat lower, found a niche for itself in markets that require more computing power than ARM cores can provide. Although MIPS processor cores often look more innovative, it is more difficult for companies to make money from them, since their use is less widespread.

Nevertheless, MIPS technologies, which are used by about 55 companies, are being used in ever faster processors. Intrinsity Announces Details of 2GHz FastMIPS Processor Based on MIPS32 architecture to be combined with 2GHz Matrix DSP. And Fulcrum Microsystems announces plans to release 1GHz asynchronous processor core based on MIPS32.

And, perhaps, MIPS will find mass application for its technologies, which will allow the company to earn considerable funds (by the way, last year MIPS earned about $ 70 million.) – smart cards. It is unlikely that there will be many companies that will refuse to switch to 32-bit MIPS 4KSC core for smart cards instead of the currently used 8-bit core, because the requirements for card reliability are becoming more stringent.
