There is additional information about the laptop PC prototype presented by IBM, as well as its photographs.

To make the device as light as possible, Meta Pad consists of two parts: a “core” (some analogue of a system unit for desktop PCs) and a “peripheral module” – a display with batteries and I / O ports. The “core” contains a processor operating with a clock frequency of 300 to 800 MHz, a 10 GB hard disk, 128 MB of RAM and a video adapter with 8 MB of video memory. The Meta Pad touchscreen display measures 5.8 inches (147 mm) and weighs (including batteries) almost 400 g.

IBM conceived this device as a computing basis for building portable systems in which Meta Pad can be used in several ways: connect a touch screen and use it as a PDA, connect the device to a portable base with a keyboard and display and use it for working outside the home, insert the device into a suitcase with a keyboard and use as a laptop, connect to the head display and use as a wearable computer for tasks that require free hands. IBM also believes that in the future, Meta Pad can be used to implement an alternative method of building servers – installing a fairly large number of such devices in a small rack.

The undoubted advantage of the device is that it does not require synchronization with a PC, it itself allows you to run many applications usually used on desktop PCs and allows you to work under any operating system. In addition to everything else, IBM promises to deliver new speech and handwriting recognition software with Meta Pad. But there is also a serious drawback: the device is rather poorly adapted to work on the network, so for users who need constant communication with the outside world, a regular laptop may be preferable.

The prototype, which IBM will showcase at DEMO in Phoenix next week, uses a custom version of Windows XP with built-in handwriting recognition.
