Hitachi LCD: return

While Japanese LCD panel makers were hit hard by their Korean and Taiwanese competitors last year, this year may be about to change dramatically. At least that’s what Fumiaki Yonai, president of Hitachi’s LCD division, which was forced to suspend operations last year due to unprofitable production, thinks so. Hitachi LCD is going to return to business by April.

New factors were also named that will allow the company to do this: new technologies, new factories in Japan and China, rising world prices for LCD panels. Iyonai believes that the company’s factories will be operating at full capacity this year.

While Sharp is heavily betting on LCD TVs, NEC is outsourcing, and Toshiba and Matsushita are planning to join forces for LCD panels, Hitachi is looking to seriously enter the market for conventional amorphous TFT-LCDs, low temperature polycrystalline silicon LCDs, and organic OLED displays. The company does not intend to do the latter yet due to some problems with materials for these displays.

Basically, with strong amorphous TFT-LCD technology, two new factories in China and the current situation in the TFT-LCD market, Hitachi has every chance.
