XD-Picture Flash Cards from Olympus and Fuji

Olympus and Fuji Photo Film, who worked together to develop the xD-Picture (xD stands for “eXtreme digital”) flash card format, today announced their new drive lines.

XD-Picture Cards are comparable in size to the familiar SmartMedia format, but slightly smaller and lighter: xD-Picture Cards are about 0.85 cc. cm, dimensions 20.0 x 25.0 x 1.7 mm, weight 2 grams. In the future, xD-Picture Card will have a capacity of up to 8 GB. The new cards are compatible with many modern digital cameras equipped with Compact Flash connectors (through a special adapter), their prices will be comparable to the current price level for SmartMedia cards.

XD-Picture Cards Will Be Produced In Collaboration With Toshiba Corp. (by the way, the owner of the SmartMedia trademark) and will go on sale this fall, initially, complete with digital cameras from Olympus and Fujifilm.

Initially, in August, cards with a capacity of 16 MB, 32 MB, 64 MB will go on sale. in September – 128 MB, however, already in December 256 MB cards will be presented, and versions with a capacity of 512 MB, 1 GB and 8 GB are expected on the market during 2021.
