Palm on XScale will be made by Asustek

It is reported that Asustek Computer has signed a deal with Palm to supply PDA based on Intel PXA 250 microprocessor and Palm OS 5 platform. Deliveries will be made next year.

It’s not too clear why Palm chose Asustek. It is possible that the terms of the deal offered by Asustek turned out to be more profitable than its Taiwanese competitors Inventec and Wistron. It is possible that other Taiwanese vendors have already found themselves in the camp of Palm’s competitors. However, one way or another, Asustek’s reputation in the pocket PC market is quite high, as evidenced by its previous contract with NEC.

According to the company’s plans, the first pocket PCs based on РХА250 will be released this year, while mass production will begin in the first quarter of 2021. Companies aim to deliver at least 200,000 units per month.
