Motorola talks about the third generation PowerQuicc

Motorola will reveal details of the new architecture for its third-generation PowerQuicc communications processor today at the Smart Networks Developers Forum, with previews due in early 2021.

Several details of the MPC8560 PowerQuicc III processor, such as the PowerPC e500 RISC core and Ocean switching logic, have already been announced in the company’s roadmap. Other details, however, including RapidIO embedded communications technology, PCI-X, DDR SDRAM, and Gigabit Ethernet ports, have come as a surprise to many.

In addition, it will be the first processor in the PowerQuicc family to use the SoC methodology for the internal core and some bus elements that do not need to be tuned for specific tasks. Only a few elements (in particular, the e500) remain fully specialized.

The PowerQuicc III e500 RISC core supports clock speeds up to 1 GHz, has a seven-level cache, of which the L2 cache is 256 KB.

8560 is currently undergoing rigorous verification. Motorola assures they will have a fully functional chip by the end of the year.
