Atomic memory devices – in the next 20 years

Scientists at the University of Wisconsin Madison in the USA and the University of Basel in Switzerland claim to have developed a memory element in which information is encoded at the atomic level.

According to Professor Franz Himpsel, team leader and lead researcher, one or zero is encoded by the presence or absence of single silicon atoms in specific positions.

Scientists covered a silicon crystal with a thin layer of gold in such a way that tracks five atoms wide each formed on the surface. Recording is carried out by removing atoms from the edge of the track using a scanning tunneling microscope, and reading is performed while passing near the track. It is claimed that the recording density with this method is about 250 Tbit / sq. inch (and this is, if not the limit, then very close to that). There is, however, one drawback, in order to compensate for the lack of atoms removed from the tracks when recording atoms, the crystal will have to be covered with gold again. In general, all this strongly resembles the Millipede IBM technology, only there the recording density was lower – 1 Tbit / sq. cm.

And there is one more problem – write / read speed. According to Professor Himpsel, when approaching the recording density limit, the data exchange rate with the information carrier will decrease more and more. The task of researchers is to find the optimal combination of recording density and information exchange rate, and this task, he believes, can be solved within the next ten to twenty years.
