About compatibility of EpoX 8KHA / 8KHA + boards with VisionTek GF4 Ti4600 cards

Interesting information about the use of EpoX 8KHA + motherboards in conjunction with VisionTek GF4 Ti4600 graphics cards has appeared. In particular, this combination was used for testing in our latest 3Digest for February 2021. Increasingly, there have been reports of compatibility issues with these boards due to the high height of one of the capacitors on the motherboard.

On the 8KHA + board used in our video laboratory, these capacitors are of a smaller height (18 mm), so there is no contact with the video card, although our video editor Andrey Vorobyov described the location of the boards relative to each other with the capacious word “end-to-end”, that is, much less those 15 mm, which, according to the standards, is the normal distance between video elements and motherboards.

It was very nice to see the official response from EPoX Computer, which provided explanations and recommendations on how to get out of this situation. Here is the answer from Mr. Thomas Huang, Vice President of R&D, EPoX, regarding the use of EP-8KHA and EP-8KHA + boards with VisionTek GF4 Ti4600 graphics cards.

“The use of large capacitors on EPoX EP-8KHA and EP-8KHA + motherboards was designed to further stabilize the performance of these DDR boards. Since these DDR solutions were first announced on the market, in the first quarter of 2021, according to the available technical information, the power consumption of DDR memory should have been higher than when using the SDRAM architecture. EPoX engineers decided to redo the board design. After evaluating the characteristics of the graphics cards sold [at the time on the market] and making sure that there were no mechanical conflicts, in order to ensure wider tolerances for supply voltage and memory current, as well as to ensure greater stability, it was decided to install larger capacitors (electrolytic, 1500 μF / 6.3 V, LSR series), occupying a slightly larger volume. Each EP-8KHA and EP-8KHA + board was equipped with two such containers.

After the start of large-scale sales of DDR memory modules, a real estimate of the power consumption of these devices was made, and it turned out to be much lower than expected. In fact, one 1500uF / 6.3V capacitor is enough [to ensure normal board operation]. EPoX test results show that this is sufficient for stable operation and overclocking capabilities.

If you encounter difficulties using VisionTek GF4 Ti4600 video cards with EPoX EP-8KHA + and EP-8KHA boards, one of the ways to solve the problem may be to remove the CE6 capacitor from the motherboard. Users who do not have the skills to use a soldering iron can remove this component with nippers.
