IBM and Motorola: the PowerPC platform is the same, the approaches are different

Based on the events of the last year, IBM is slowly but surely moving away from the concept of Mac computers. Its G3 series processors, previously used in nearly three-quarters of all Macintosh PCs, are now available only as part of the iBook line. In contrast, Motorola’s G4 processors, previously only used in desktop G4 systems, are now appearing not only in the trendy iMacs, but also in the Titanium PowerBook line of laptops. In other words, the time has come when Motorola can be called the number one supplier of processors for Apple.

This gap widened even more after, most recently, IBM announced a multi-year agreement with Toshiba and Sony for the joint development of semiconductors using IBM technology – SOI (Silicon-On-Insulator), Low-K dielectrics and copper conductors. Exactly those technologies that made the IBM and Motorola technological processes related. The new agreement aims to combine IBM’s technology expertise with Toshiba’s manufacturing facilities and materials, Sony’s needs and marketing vision.

IBM is primarily concerned with power consumption, while Motorola intends to provide its G4 as a one-stop solution for PCs, networking and embedded devices. At comparable clock speeds, the 750FX has a power dissipation rate of about a third of the MPC7455. Moreover, the dissipation of 21.3 W 1 GHz chip Motorola G4 slightly exceeds the typical figure for embedded solutions of 15 W. For comparison: 1 GHz Athlon consumes 53 W, 800 MHz IBM 750FX – only 7.5 W.

However, despite the differences in the implementation of PowerPC processors. both companies are not going to deviate from the compatibility of their chips and, having successfully overcome the 1 GHz barrier, intend to move the platform further.
