AMD officially unveils Hammer processors

The company’s website has already posted an official press release in which AMD announced the demonstration of the next generation of its x86-64 Hammer processors.
It is also clearly indicated that the ClawHammer processor, shown in operation under 64-bit Linux and 32-bit Microsoft Windows, is manufactured using the 0.13 micron process technology and SOI (Silicon on Insulator) technology. AMD intends to start shipping the first processor family towards the end of 2021.

Alas, this is all that we managed to glean on the AMD website. The Japanese journalists who attended the presentation and captured the Hammer systems and the processors themselves came to the rescue (see. previous news).

So, the promised details. The four-layer SOLO 2 reference board based on the AMD-8000 chipset (AMD-8151 Northbridge, AMD-8111 Southbridge) is equipped with Socket 754 socket for the ClawHammer processor, two DIMM slots for DDR SDRAM PC1600 / 2100/2700 memory.

It is interesting to note that the power connector on SOLO 2 is similar to that used on Pentium 4 motherboards. It’s nice that in the future it is quite possible to use cases and power supplies with any of the systems.

The demonstrated system on ClawHammer worked for several hours, Office XP was demonstrated under 32-bit Windows XP, applications recompiled to x86-64 code worked under 64-bit Linux.

The demonstrated system used PC2700 memory, and it seems that in this configuration with ClawHammer it is possible to use only single-channel mode, with a maximum bandwidth of 2.7 GB / s and a maximum volume of 2 x 2 GB Unbuffered, that is, up to 4 GB. SledgeHammer systems will use dual channel operation with PC2700 (DDR333), which will achieve peak performance up to 5.4 Gb / s.

ClawHammer-based system supports 1.6GHz 16-bit HyperTransport bus. Systems based on SledgeHammer will use 16-bit HyperTransport buses with a clock frequency of 1.6 GHz and a bandwidth of up to 6.4 Gb / s, however, there will be three of them: two, for example, are fed to the second SledgeHammer, one to PCI. X bridge and I / O hub.

It is worth remembering that a server dual-processor version of ClawHammer is also being prepared for release – the so-called ClawHammer-DP, however, the HyperTransport architecture of ClawHammer-DP will differ from the version for desktop PCs. The number of contacts for ClawHammer-DP will be the same as for the desktop version of ClawHammer, but for ClawHammer-DP the HyperTransport organization will be different – 8 bits x 2 versus 16 bits x 1 for the “desktop” ClawHammer.
